I don't think the recent presidential elections in the United States shocked anyone more than it did Americans themselves. Are we not a liberal, forward thinking country? How could we possibly have voted a misogynistic, racist, and homophobic man into office? Well if you are asking yourself the same thing this list might include some of the feelings you had after Friday's inauguration.
1. Utter Despair
Friday's inauguration was a very somber one. I can't tell which was more devastating, seeing Donald Trump take office as the President of the United States of America or seeing former President Obama step down from that role.
2. Anger
Never before in United States history as there been so much resistance to a president taking office. If that doesn't point out the flaws in our "democracy" I don't know what will.
3. Confusion
This past year has had me utterly baffled with the presidential race and election. This MUST be a Simpsons episode because there is no way Trump is our president.....right?
4. Fear
Trump's hateful rhetoric has insight fear in a majority of the people in this country. He ran his entire campaign off of fear, who knows what's to come once he steps into office. To live in a free country and be scared for your life at the same time is absolutely absurd.
5. Hope
Now this might be a little bit of a stretch but somehow I can't stop from feeling the smallest amount of hope. No, I do not believe Trump will bring about any good change whatsoever. Though I do believe this kind of situation may be what it takes to unite the American people together against a common enemy. There has been such an outpour of love and anti-hate demonstrations throughout the country you can't help but believe that along with your fellow Americans a better future can be built from this horrible incident. That you don't need a president leading the way towards change, that you the people can be the change.
