With every new year comes many new years resolutions that never end up getting fulfilled. Some people make it their mission to lose weight, keep a diary, or do more cleaning. All of these resolutions are great to try and achieve, but sometimes can be difficult to keep up with. I have come up with a list of things to do in 2017 that will make your year better, and not feel like a chore.

1. Be kind.

The world needs more people who are simply kind. It takes nothing to smile when you walk past someone, or to hold open a door. You can make yourself feel good by also helping someone else.

2. Disconnect.

Get off of your smart phone, get away from the T.V. and enjoy life. So much time is wasted by being occupied with technology. I am as guilty as anyone else when it comes to screen time, but when you put the phone down and simply enjoy your loved ones' company, you realize how good life really is.

3. Spend time with loved ones.

Never miss a chance to enjoy time with the people you love, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. It sounds like such a cliche but it is so true.

4. Enjoy the outdoors.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and take time to enjoy nature. It is so relaxing to be outside whether you're spending a day fishing at the lake or simply sitting on your back porch.

5. Be grateful.

As terrible as you believe your life to be, there are people who truly have it worse. Wake up every morning and count your blessings because when you take a moment and reflect, life is pretty amazing.

Happy New Year!

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
