Seeing Double: 5 Things I Love About Being A Twin

Being a twin has definitely been a blessing, but believe me, I have not always been the first to say that. The twin life has had its share of difficulties from always being compared to your sibling, to being seen as a half, and getting the typical questions like "Do you look alike?" "Are you best friends?" and even "Can you read each others mind?"

For those of you that have been close to my sister Allie, and me, you know that we are complete opposites, we argue over the stupidest things, and we definitely have no twin "super powers." Heck, I even kicked her out of the womb, making us two months early! However, you also know that we love each other unconditionally, we cannot go a day without talking, and we would totally be lost without each other. There are so many things I have learned to love about being a twin, but here are some of my favorites:

1. You always have someone to pick on.

You know how our moms always told us that the boy in elementary school picked on you because he liked you? I am that elementary school boy. For some reason I annoy the ones I love, maybe just because I think I am funny, but either way, if Allie was not around, I would have no one to pick on. Whether it be pulling pranks on her, singing my favorite songs until I lose my voice, or embarrassing her in public with my awesome dance moves, I am always finding a way to show her I love her...it really is out of love.

2. You always have a partner to team up on the parents with.

OK, I know you all know that feeling of achievment when you and your siblings go up against your parents and win. I always have a partner to battle with because we are usually together. Whether it be going out for dinner, talking our mom out of making us run her errands, or getting my dad to let Allie stay home another day from work to spend time with me, we always have each other's backs. Our parents may hate when we get along and team up, but there are two of us and two of them, so it seems pretty fair to me.

3. There is always someone to make you laugh.

When your first language is sarcasm and your sister is a goofball, there are bound to be some good laughs. I can always count on my sister to cheer me up if I am having a bad day. She makes me laugh until I cry, and we always have the best inside jokes. Not to mention, teaming up to pick on our parents always provides a good laugh, too. Honestly, my life would be a lot more dull without having Allie by my side, giving me a reason to smile.

4. You always have a shotgun rider.

Let's be honest, some of the greatest times I have with you are simply cruising in the convertible and blasting some tunes. Whether I am chauffeuring you, we are headed shopping, or we were forced to run errands for the parents, we can always make it an adventure. Thanks for putting up with my driving, holding your breath with me when I probably should have waited to make that left turn, and letting me dance like an idiot when my favorite songs come on. I would not want anyone but you riding shotgun, Allie.

5. You always have a best friend.

We have definitely had our share of disagreements, screaming matches and bruises, but I would not give up being a twin for anything. I know that no matter where life takes me, you will always be there to love and support me. After 18 years of being at each other's throats, I am beyond grateful that we finally grew up and realized how much we needed each other. Thank you for loving me for who I am and for always giving me someone to call my best friend.

I love you, Allie!

I'm the Short Friend. I've been the Short Friend since about the seventh grade. I'm the one who stands in the front of the photos, gets made fun of for their height, and still shops in the kids department.

This article is not for the Almost Short Friends, i.e. the 5'3" and 5'4" Friends. No no, this is for the Actually Short Friends, i.e. the Barely Scraping 5'1" and shorter Short Friends.

This semester I started my journey as a member of my University's Alumni Outreach Team. This means a lot of things, but primarily it means that I get to make phone calls to parents and alumni two nights a week to update contact information, collect things like business cards and volunteer hours, and even ask for money.
