Over the past 8 months that I have been working in a restaurant I have learned some pretty handy things.
1. The power of tips
It's just nice to feel appreciated. Every little tip adds up and it's quite motivating to see the number rise. Honestly, there is nothing worse than a poor tipper, especially when you put a lot of effort into working hard. Always tip, and tip generously because people work a lot harder than they show.
2. Some people are just mean
When in the middle of the dinner rush, things take a little longer. That's just the way it is. Some people are understanding and willing to wait, but there will always be people who voice their opinions even if you can't do anything to help them. As great as critics can be, some people are rude and you just have to smile and move on.
3. Multitasking is a serious life-saver
There are a million things to do and a time limit on all of them, so effectively multitasking will seriously save your butt. Falling behind on something can have serious consequences, so it's important to get things done in a timely manner even if you have to do a couple things at once. It will always pay off.
4. Mistakes happen
I make mistakes, my coworkers make mistakes, customers make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes. All you can do is brush it off and do the best that you can to fix it. And when others make mistakes, help fix the mistakes and be understanding because they suck, but they happen.
5. Always prepare
Never be doing nothing. Chances are something needs to be restocked or cut or rolled or prepared in some way. The more you prepare the better the rush will be and the less you will have to do before you can leave.
