Yik Yak

Oh, Yik Yak, what a creepy, anonymous, hilarious app you are. You really contribute to university culture and you seem to be transforming into a bizarre Craigslist personal ad while you're at it.

So many times, after perusing your posts, I am left like this:

I've learned so much about my fellow students from your threads, and I'd like to share that. Here are the top five things I've learned about the Oregon State University student body from you.

1. There are a lot of internet warriors out there.

Damn, Oregon State, you are full of passionate people armed with an iPhone and a lot of angst. Nearly every thread on Yik Yak involves at least two people verbally assaulting each other with hilarious, 200-character monologues.

2. Never underestimate the thirst of a casual Yik Yakker.

M or F? This is the sole reason I will not post or comment on anything remotely related to physical interaction on Yak. The thirst is real, guys, and it's not limited to one gender. Something about anonymity really brings out the sexual frustrations of our student body.

3. Yik Yak is the place for passive-aggressive complaints about roommates.

Scrolling through the app will reveal plenty of hilarious, incredibly passive aggressive posts about roommates. Roomies who make loud noises at night? There's a thread for that. Rando-roomies bringing strange things into the dorm/apartment? You betcha, there's a thread for that. Loud sex happening in the room where you're trying to sleep? There's definitely a thread for that, possibly several, along with lots of creepy comments.

4. Oregon State students care.

Amongst all the sexual, angsty, and simply bizarre posts there are some that are heartbreaking. Students who are struggling with a variety of life-changing issues reach out to the Yak community- from mental health to break ups. I've learned that OSU students really care; they reach out to each other with uplifting comments and CAPS information. Occasionally, students will comment with their personal contact information so that someone in need has someone to talk to. We even reach out to each other to answer tricky MyMathLab questions, and sometimes we play Academic Advisor for students with general admission and course queries.

5. We are hilarious.

We crack ourselves up with helpful posts like "Study Tip: laminate your notes so your tears roll right off" and hilarious public service announcements like "Yo, girl in the 3rd row of MTH 211, shut the f*&%^ up." Overall, Beavers have great senses of humor and we never fail to pick each other up on Yak with our witty little Yaks.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
