As I go into my second semester of college I am reflecting back on all of the things I have learned since being here. I have come to know myself a lot better, met others, and learned some valuable life lessons.
1. It's okay to say no
I've always been bad at saying no. I used to feel rude or awkward saying no to things so I always said yes. However, since being in college I have learned that you physically can't say yes to everything! I have slowly learned that it is perfectly okay to say no and you should get used to it because you will be saying no a lot in your life.
2. The freshman 15 is real!
I kind of believed in the warnings people gave about gaining weight in college but I didn't fully believe it until I was there. Eating in the school cafeteria is all you can eat so I would get seconds more than usually to "get my money's worth" (NOT A GOOD IDEA).
3. I still need my parents
When I moved into my dorm I was really excited to be on my own and live independently. However, I quickly realized that I needed my parents more than I thought. I was calling home frequently for numerous things. Money, help with doctors appointments, laundry advice, etc. You will always need your family. Don't try to go in alone!
4. Be open to change
I'm not good with change, but in college, you're kind of forced to deal with it. Trying new things, changing your schedule, changing your habits, or even changing your major! This part of your life is meant for experimenting so embrace change and see where it takes you.
5. It's not like high school
When they say that high school prepares you for college... they aren't;t entirely right. College is nothing like high school! You have to approach studying in a different way, you don't have school from 8-3 every day, and classes are not structured the same. College is filled with new opportunities and fun but it is also filled with new challenges.
