As the great YouTube star, Jenna Marbles said, "life's too short not to have fun hair." This is what ultimately inspired me to first color my hair roughly six months ago. It started with a pink ombre, then I committed to fully bleaching my head and dying it all pink. After that, I dyed it purple. Now, my hair is blue. I have learned a lot about having colored hair since first dying it in January.
1. It's fun
I get to die my hair a new color every month. Also, I get to explore different ways and techniques of dying my hair. Sometimes, my friends will help me which is always a great time; we turn on some music and jam. And sometimes, it doesn't come out the way I wanted it, but I work with it anyways. The more positive and open-minded you are, the more fun it is.
2. People will either love it or hate it
Obviously, I care what others think, but at the same time, I don't. Ultimately, it's my hair. I get more positive feedback than negative, which is nice. There is the occasional "why would you do that do yourself?" comment. I just say "I don't know" or "because I wanted to." I don't really have a reason why other than I just thought it would be cool. I also get the people who say, "Your hair is going to fall out!" This is just a myth, though. One time, a little girl stared at me for a while and then said, "You have mermaid hair!"
3. It has improved my confidence
Self-confidence is something I've lacked in the past. However, when I first dyed my hair, it was like awakening a whole new me. Everyone should experience this. It was like a fresh start. I've also learned to not care when people do make negative comments or give me weird looks. I'm just being myself and that is more important to me than what others think. Having colored hair fits my weird, goofy personality.
4. It can be a lot to manage
Bleaching my hair was a huge struggle, especially since my natural color is a dark brown. I had to bleach it twice before it was light enough for the color to show up. That also means that my hair is a little fried, but with the occasional deep conditioning, it starts to feel less dry. The hair dye I use is semi-permanent, which means it fades away much quicker than permanent hair dye. It stays in my hair for about three weeks. For a college kid in three organizations, finding the time to spend an hour and a half to dye my hair can be challenging. On top of that, it can get expensive to buy the gloves and the hair dye, especially if you get it professionally done.
Dying my hair has been an exciting adventure. I would definitely recommend to both guys and gals dying their hair at least once. If you don't like it, you can always laugh about it and just cut it off or dye it back to your natural color. Take the chance to do something new and possibly risky, even if it is just dying your hair.
In the end, you'll learn a lot about yourself and others.
