5 Things I've Learned From Public School
Amanda Lombardo

This upcoming school year I will be entering my final year of high school and public school all together and decided to list five things I have learned through out my years in the public school system.

1. That one friend you meet in Elementary School will stick with you through everything

Whether you guys stop talking for a while, get into a fight, or grow into different people, your best friend from Elementary School will always be there for you. Almost every Elementary School friendship ends but there are always certain friends who will be able to text you years later and easily start a conversation without it feeling forced or awkward.

2. At one point, you’ll become friends with people who pretend they like you

That small group of people you met in middle school will probably end up only becoming friends with you to talk about what you’ve told them behind your back. You could tell one person who your crush is and next day the whole school will know, but yet you’ll still continue to trust them until they slowly begin to stop talking to you all together.

3. High School is nothing like the movies you see

You won’t be shoved into a locker for being a freshman or being a bit nerdy. You’ll realize that upperclassmen aren’t as scary as everyone makes them seem and eventually you might even befriend some of them.

4. High School will go by quickly

Although you may feel like each day drags on, your first year of high school will be over in no time. Then, your second and third will pass before your eyes. Before you realize it you’ll be driving to and from school. You’ll start looking and applying to colleges and eventually you’ll find yourself walking over to your principal and accepting the diploma you worked many years for.

5. You’ll miss the memories

You may hate the excessive amounts of homework and having to wake up early to be at school on time, but you’ll soon realize how much you’ll miss it once you start to really think back on the good times. You’ll start to appreciate the times you had back in Elementary School where you got to color and play outside on the playground. You’ll miss the times in middle school when you made nicknames up for your crushes so you and your friends could talk about them out loud without them knowing its them. You’ll miss all your favorite teachers that helped you develop into the person you’ve become. You’ll look back to your first date and realize that even though the relationship that came with it may not have ended well, you were able to grow and learn from your mistakes. You’ll miss that great time you had at prom when you and all your friends danced the night away. Once you walk over and receive your diploma, you’ll miss waking up everyday and seeing the people you grew up with whether you enjoyed them or really wish you didn’t know them.

If you are entering your last year of high school, make sure to make it one of the best years you’ve had. Once it’s over, you can't go back and relive it or change anything you’ve done. Make some spontaneous decisions and let yourself live a little because once you start the next chapter in your life you’ll realize you won’t have it as easy as you did during K-12.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
