Just as any other high school senior about to graduate, I was very scared for what was about to come. Starting college, making new friends, and living away from home are all big adjustments to get used to. Now, halfway through the second semester of my freshman year, I can say that these are the five biggest things I've learned since coming to college.
1. Things don't always go as planned, and change can be good.
The expectations I had for how my life would be my freshman year of college are much different than what has happened. I have had to deal with many difficult situations and changes recently that I never would have expected a year ago. For many people, freshman year of college brings about many changes both good and bad. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing though - it teaches you a lot about yourself, your goals, and your interests. I'm a strong believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason, so although you will be faced with some changes, they will only help you grow.
2. What is meant to be will be.
Many people will tell you that once you graduate high school and start college you'll only stay in touch will a small number of friends. While this may be true, the friendships that you keep are the ones that are important to the both of you. I think that a lot of my friendships from high school have gotten stronger since I've gotten to college, simply because we don't get to see each other everyday anymore so when we do get a chance to talk or meet up, it's that much more special and exciting.
3. You should always take advantage of the opportunities around you.
At my school, and I'm sure many other schools too, there are countless opportunities for students to get involved such as different clubs, leadership opportunities, and events. I've joined a few clubs and attended many events since coming to college and I can say that each one has made me enjoy my first year here so much more. I have met new friends, and have gotten to experience things like attending my first Teddi Dance for Love and my first NHL game as well!
4. Your parents do more for you than you realize.
Living away from home and your parents is a big adjustment to get used to. It's not until you're living in a college dorm that you realize how good those home cooked meals were and how nice it was to have someone to take care of you when you're sick. I have become much more appreciative and grateful for how much my parents do for me since I've started college. Although it's a lot of fun living at school, it's a good thing they're only a phone call away when you have a question about laundry or need a pick-me-up.
5. You and your sibling(s) will get much closer.
There's something about being apart from your sibling that makes the bond between you so much stronger. Since my sister and I have started college and I've moved into my dorm I've found myself texting my sister much more than I used to just to see what's up. She's now one of the first people I go to with news, and she comes to visit my roommates and I almost every weekend. I used to be disgusted by the idea of us going to the same college one day, but now I'm actually looking forward to the possibility.
