5 Things I've Learned While Dorm Shopping

I've spent the past three months dorm shopping and here's what I've learned.

Like most first year students, I'm currently in the process of dorm shopping (cue the groan). I've read hundreds of lists on what to and what not to bring, even going as far to make my own list. If you look at my Pinterest and Facebook it's covered with articles about the first year of college. It's honestly crazy. But through all of the craziness that is college prep I've learned some things.

1. Pinterest is your friend

Most of the articles I read about college are from Pinterest. They have cute cover photos and share a real, first person account of a college aspect. It's a real plus when trying to figure out if you really need to bring that tv or not. Pinterest has given me so many tips besides college packing lists, so if you need other advice too check it out.

2. But Pinterest can be your biggest enemy

Yes the thousands of articles on what to bring to college are great, but they can be overwhelming. A lot of the lists have the same basic things on them, so reading a ton of lists just titled "what to bring to college" just brings unnecessary stress. My advice is to read a few articles to make your own basic list and then just start reading more entitled "X things I didn't think to bring my first year". But, those too can get repetitive so make sure to only read a few.

3. Make your own list

It's hard to remember what all of the lists say and you definitely don't want to be on Pinterest while walking around Target, so make your own list. My mom read some of the articles I sent her and then made us both a list. It's a great way to see exactly what you think you need to bring while you're on the go. Also, we cross off the things when we get them so we know what we still need to buy.

4. Have a plan

Along with having a buying/packing list, having a plan or general idea of what all you need and where to get it is great. This includes knowing what color scheme you want, knowing where everything is going to in your specific dorm room, and knowing where you are going to buy these things. Also, a part of planning is knowing what you can bring to college, so see if your school has a what not to bring list on their residence life website so you don't end up with a bunch of stuff you can't have in your dorm.

5. Have fun

You are starting this new, incredible journey so you shouldn't worrying about it. Don't stress the small stuff and have fun letting your creative side go! Besides, how many times do you get to redo a whole new space?

Shopping for college can be super stressful and crazy, but don't let it get to you! You are about to start a new chapter in your life, so enjoy every moment of it!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
