Going off to college seems like it's going to be the best thing ever. Don't get me wrong, it is, but there are just some things that we miss out on while at college. It's the little things that we took for granted while we were still at home. Here are five things I've learned to appreciate since going off to college.

1. Parents.

Not only are most of them paying for your schooling, but they are also your number one fans throughout your experience at college. They love you even when you mess up, which does happen often. With being off on your own at college, there is something so comfortable about being with your family again. I have learned a great appreciation for my parents since going to college. Back in high school, I thought my parents were the most cruel creatures on this earth. Yes mom and dad, I was wrong. You have supported me throughout everything and you know what? You guys are usually always right when you give me advice (and I chose not to listen).

2. Home-cooked meals.

Even if your school has semi-decent food, nothing will ever compare to a home-cooked meal. There is just something about a homemade meal that can't be replicated by the cafeteria staff. Maybe it's the fact that it's not the same old PB&J or Ramen Noodles that you eat everyday at school, but maybe it's the fact that it is a meal made with love in the comforts of someone's home.

3. Sleep.

Going off to college, I never realized how little I appreciated a good night's rest. When you get to school, sleep goes on the back burner to homework, studying, partying, and hanging with friends. Or in some cases, you get stuck with a crappy roommate who keeps you up all night with their shenanigans...lucky you. Since the start of this year, I have gotten an average of five and a half hours of sleep a night. No nap or chance to sleep in will change the constantly tired feeling.

4. Animals.

Every time I see an animal on campus, I get really excited. Probably a little too excited. When you have to live away from your furry friends at home, there is an animal withdrawal that starts to form. I think that is why I attack every dog or cat that comes within 20 yards of me. College has made me appreciate the unconditional love and snuggles of my animals at home.

5. Free time.

I like to be involved in a lot of things when I get to school: sports, academic clubs, social life, homework, on campus activities, internship, and much more. But with that comes a lot of commitment...and not a lot of free time. When I finally do get the chance to just relax, there is the ever-lurking feeling that I should be doing some sort of homework or studying. Let's just face it, college doesn't have much free time. If we do get the chance, we need to really appreciate it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
