It's that time of year again! Summertime has arrived and as usual, it has the expectations of fun in the sun and making memories that will last a lifetime. As college students, our budgets make it hard for us to take vacations or road trips. Between summer jobs and trying to save money at every turn, it's difficult to make trips happen and fill our summers with expensive outings. However, there are things you can do near your own town that won't break the bank!
1. Take a night trip to the beach
You would be surprised how fun the beach is once the clock strikes five. Not only is the parking free after dusk, but the nightlife here includes live music and a place to get food and drinks. There's nothing like sitting at the tables with your friends sipping Sprite and eating french fries while listening to a cover of the newest Maroon 5 song. It's also great to walk along the shore with a beautiful view of the sunset and not worrying about getting sunburnt!
2. Have a Netflix night
Admit it, we all have our Netflix obsession. Whether it's "Orange is the New Black," "Stranger Things," "13 Reasons Why," or my new favorite, "Riverdale," we all love our Netflix binges. Why not use the time that was usually taken up by studying to get caught up on your favorite shows and what better way to do that than to invite your besties to share it with you? Pop some popcorn, get comfy on the couch and share the drama!
3. Throw a BBQ
Nothing says summer like food straight from the grill. Get together with friends and family, share the love and have everyone bring their own dish to share. Kick back with a can of Coke and throw on the burgers and Pandora's 2000's pop station. BBQ's are the epitome of summer, so gather 'round, chill out and have a great time!
4. Head to your local county park
These are the hidden gems people! There's something so peaceful about walking the trails of these parks just enjoying nature. A lot of these parks also have baseball fields, volleyball nets, and basketball courts, all free! It's a great place to have picnics or just to enjoy some sunlight and fresh air.
5. Have a bonfire
Summer nights call for these! Late nights around a fire toasting marshmallows: you cannot describe summer any better. It's so relaxing to just hang with friends around a warm fire on a cool night. Sharing stories with one another, or memories that you've had, bonfires create a closeness that you can't get sitting by the pool.
