5 Things I Have Learned From My First Semester Of College
College Right

Wow. What a couple months it has been. It feels like just yesterday, I was moving into my dorm room eager to start Band Camp and Sorority Recruitment Week. And now, here I am, studying for my finals and missing football already. I can definitely say this is the busiest and most stressful part of my life that I have experienced so far, but I would never change it, even if I could. Here are some things I learned from my first semester of college:

1. How much food really costs (oh, and how much food I actually eat)

Although I haven't been doomed with the stereotypical "Freshman 15" yet, I do eat a lot more than I did when I lived at home (or it atlas feels that way). Also, I have now learned how to go to the grocery store alone. Having to spend your own money on groceries rather than just having your mom buy them when your home definitely teaches you how to correctly budget and decide what is a want and what is a need, haha!

2. How Hard It Really Is To Study For A Final

Studying for a final in college is way different than studying in high school. Unlike high school, there are not as many study guides so in someways, it feels like your going into the exam blind, but that is why you just study everything you've ever learned honestly (Because that can't take too long right...)

3. How Glad I Am To Have Gone To An Out Of State College

Of course it was not easiest to leave all of my high school friends back in Georgia to come start my college journey some where else with complete strangers, but I am so happy I got the opportunity to in a way "start over"! I have already met some of my best friends both in marching band and my sorority, Delta Zeta, and I know if I would not have made the decision to come to Auburn, I would not be as happy as I am today!

4. How Hard It Is To Be Away From Home

I was totally that person in high school who was always just ready to leave and go off to college, but now that I have, it is way more difficult to be away from my fun, crazy, and loving family! However, every time I go home, I cherish it so much more and family time is way more important to me than it used to be!

5. How Much I Love My University

I am so lucky to have found my place in Auburn. I have gotten involved in so many different ways and still found ways to continue to participate in my passions! I love everyone at Auburn's love for Auburn and of course, Auburn football! Auburn is for sure the school for me and I am so blessed to have found it! I can't wait to continue my journey for the next couple years and prepare for my future!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
