5 Things I Am Grateful For

Giving thanks to things that have impacted my life.

With Thanksgiving being last week, I thought it would be nice to write about what I am grateful for. Sometimes we go through life not giving the thanks people deserve. With this piece, I'm going to give my thanks to people who had a major impact on my life, and who have taught me valuable life lessons.

1. Family

I am very grateful and proud to have a family like mine. My providing parents have allowed to have tools that some kids don't have. They continue to push me on my quest for knowledge and following my passions. I am thankful for my grandparents who send me nice words of encouragement and making me goodies (they also slip in a twenty from time to time). My brother, whom I grew up with and had an amazing childhood with. Can't wait for the winter break so we can run through Gears 4 together. Of course, I am grateful for my two puppies, Bella and Nylah, who bring nothing but excitement to the house.

2. Friends

I am thankful for high school friends, and college friends I have met so far at Bridgewater State. I had the opportunity of meeting up with my high school friends over break and it was like we never left the lunch table. We were joking with each other the whole time and made me reminisce of the high school days. To my college friends, thank you for making college a fun social experiment for me. My time on campus has been a blast so far and can't wait to see what else is in store.

3. Books

Where would we be without books! I love to read books when I have the time. Recently, I have been reading a lot of philosophy to challenge how I view things but soon I will be heading back to fiction, non-fiction, and historical. There is nothing like getting cozy on a rainy day and reading a good book.

4. My Environment

As much as I don't like a lot of the things that goes on in America, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We are probably the most secure country on the planet with our military. I am grateful I don't have to see war outside my house, famine, or people dying. I am grateful to live somewhere where I can accomplish my goals and become who I want to be.

5. The Changing Of The Seasons

There is nothing like the changing of the seasons. I think New England is the best place to experience the changes of the seasons. I cannot stand the winter here. I love to watch the snow fall but it is an absolutely pain to shovel. I thrive in the summer time where the days are longer and it is hot. When it gets insanely hot, nothing is better than taking a day trip to the cape and relaxing by the beach.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
