Most of us have worked with food or even work in the food business. We've worked at Taco Bell, Wendy's, McDonald's, places where you serve food, cook it or even at a deli somewhere in a local grocery store or just a place that makes and/or serves food. It is a tricky business. There are so many things you have to remember to do, trying not to lose your cool, and even just trying to be a decent human being at times, even when it's extremely hard. There are a few things that all know if they have ever worked with food or even around it.
1. Wash your hands, wash your hands, oh wait, wash your hands again.
I am not even kidding you on this one. Take gloves off, wash your hands, put new gloves on before touching any food. Touch food with your bare hands, better go put your hands back in the sink. Bathroom break, wash hands before you leave, then wash your hands once again when getting to the food area before putting your gloves back on. We wash our hands so much that we become perfect at the ways to make sure our hands were clean. This is so important when working with food and knowing that you will get in trouble if caught not washing your hands one time.
2. The good, the bad, and the worst in customers.
Customers come in good and bad. They can make your day or make it worse. There are some out there that are never satisfied and get angry at the little things where you just want to come over the counter and give them a piece of your mind, but knowing the phrase "the customer is always right" sticks with you and you try to keep your cool the best as possible. There are even the regular terrible customers that come in that you and your coworkers will know them by the one terrible thing they did. Trust me, if you end up being a terrible customer, you will be mocked and your story about how terrible you were to all the other coworkers time and time again. Then, there are the amazing customers that will make your day. No matter what mood your in, there are the customers that can absolutely make you smile and make your day better. I know with working in the deli, I have some amazing customers that can put a smile on my face. There are some of my regulars that can make my job a little easier because they understand when we get busy or just enjoy the little talks to see what I am up to and want to know what's going on in my life. Either way, there are the good, the bad and the far worse customers.
3. Your coworkers are the absolute best.
I am not saying that other coworkers aren't the best, but when it comes to working with people in food, it's pretty awesome. They become some amazing friends that you'll have in your life. When it comes to how bad some customers are, they will totally understand. Some of them will even have a customer story to tell you and you'll both understand how frustrating it can get. They totally get how stressful some days get. Most won't even get mad when they come in and you haven't been able to get any cleaning done. They've been there, they know that there are some days that are busier than others and will be more than happy to help you clean up and prepare for the next shift to come it.
4. Finally getting a moment to breathe after a busy rush.
Rushes are beyond crazy. Once you get a moment of breath and can relax, it is always a good moment. You just want to take a moment off to the side before deciding to look at the mess that was just made that you now have to clean up. Rushes can be hard though, when dishes start to pile up, your all over the place with orders, and sometimes you feel like you can't even catch up because there is just so much to do. Orders keep coming in, orders keep going out and sometimes all you need is a moment to fill things up, but as soon as you start trying to fill anything up, you get side tracked trying to finish or start other orders. That moment of breath afterwards is a good feeling.
5. The odd, yet pleasing smell of the walk in.
Don't deny it. I know that I am not the only one that knows the smell. You walk in and it's a weird smell that is oddly pleasing to the nose. At first, you might tell yourself that you don't care for the smell, but after a few times, you kinda sorta like it. It is not that it is gross or anything but there is just that one moment of telling yourself that you actually enjoy the moment of it. There is all the food that comes together that makes one different smell that you can't get anywhere else. Not only the smell, but there is always a slight fear of getting locked in and not being found for a while.
Though you work in food or have worked with food you know what it's like. There are some days that are better than others. Customers that are far worse than others. There is always another story to tell. Though no matter how many times you tell yourself a customer is always right or how many times you feel the need to punch somebody, you take away from the job what others don't always get. You've got the best coworkers and there are days that keep you on your toes for hours. Here's to another day of keeping your job!
