Although it's always disappointing when we have to trade in our summer freedom for the start of a new semester, the onset of fall brings a new sense of happiness. The leaves begin to change colors, sweater weather emerges, and pumpkin spice is everywhere. Instead of dreading this seasonal change, break out your hiking books, pop your pumpkin muffins in the oven and get ready to embrace one of the best seasons the Midwest has to offer. Here are five things you need to do this fall.
1. Go Hiking- Being constantly immersed in the college mindset, it's nice to take a weekend to enjoy nature. Take advantage of the local state parks in your area and go for a weekend trip with friends. Many state parks have a variety of activities like hiking, canoeing, bird-watching, and biking. Take advantage of all that nature has to offer. It's a great time to relax and watch the leaves change color.
2. Indulge in Pumpkin Everything- Before the peppermint and holiday flavors take over the grocery store, make sure to try the best seasonal flavor; pumpkin spice. Everything from Oreos to coffee creamer, from cream cheese to muffins, and from bagels to ice cream, comes in a limited edition pumpkin spice variety. Most brewing companies even put out a seasonal brew that is perfect for any fall night.
3. Have a Bonfire- When reminiscing on high school, some of the best nights were those spent around bonfires. Rekindle these memories with a bonfire this October. Grab a group of friends, some graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate and you're good to go.
4. Have a Scary Movie Marathon- Embrace the Halloween spirit and have a scary movie marathon with your roommates or friends. Start with some classics like The Ring and Silence of the Lambs and Halloween. Then move on to more modern day thrillers like The Purge and It Follows. Pop some popcorn, break out the blankets, and spend a cozy day on the couch.
5. Read Outside- If you're not already reading a book, it's about time to pick one up. Whether it's a New York Times Best Seller or a chapter of your history textbook, do your reading outside. Throw on a sweater and your favorite pair of boots and spend the day reading in the sunshine. As the days continue to get shorter, take advantage of the sunshine before winter appears.
Fall can be one of the best seasons. The plethora of outdoor activities leaves you with endless opportunities to make this October the best month yet. From apple picking to pumpkin carving and haunted houses to nature walks, there are plenty of chances to get up, get out, and do something. Get out of your regular routine this October and enjoy all there is to do this fall!
