Are you new to the professional world? Starting a new job can be intimidating and overwhelming. There are so many things to learn when it comes to the company, the workplace and the people you work with. Whether you’re starting an internship or beginning your professional career, these five tips will put you on the path to success:

1. Network frequently

Being the 'new one' in the office can be intimidating. Rather than sinking back into your shell and only speaking when spoken to, why not build some professional relationships? Just chat with people! Go to networking events, participate in company activities or even take the initiative to bring coffee in for everyone one morning. Building solid relationships early on could be beneficial for you later on. You never know who someone might have connections with that could put you on the fast track to success.

2. Go Over-The-Top

Hard work pays off, there's no doubt about it. Instead of just meeting the minimum requirements on a project, why not go above and beyond to really impress your supervisor. Simply adding something a little extra here and there will make all of the difference. Also, be prepared with additional information. You may get asked questions and rather than trying to search deep for the answers on the spot, have some information tucked away at your convenience.

3. Keep your cool

We all have bad days, there is no denying it; But do you really have time in your workday to balance out all of your tasks as well as your personal life baggage? Come in to the office ready to tackle the day without any strings attached. Gossip and work politics can be tempting and overwhelming, but in the end it's about the business, not others' pettiness.

4. Be proud of where you stand

Whether this is your first internship or your first entry-level job, we all have to start somewhere. You've learned a lot in school, but on-the-job training is where you really learn the skills necessary for your position. It is inevitable that you'll start at the bottom and work your way up, but use that as motivation to work your way to the top!

5. Ask questions

Even though you might feel that you're annoying everyone with questions, don't dwell on it too much. Asking questions is how you know exactly what to do in the workplace. Wouldn't you rather know what to do instead of doing something incorrectly and having to redo it? You'll know exactly what to deliver and will be able to perfect it as much as possible!

Young professional everywhere have to start somewhere. Why not dive in head first and be as productive and efficient as you can? It's time to show employers that millennials aren't just the stereotypical internet-obsessed young adults that some people make us out to be, and that we are ready for success!

Even Shonda Rhimes, winning creator and executive producer of the hit TV shows Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Catch agrees that relationships with fictional characters are real. In her book, The Year of Yes she states, "I have spent more time with Meredith and Christina then many of my actual friends...When you watched TV, even spending a full hour with Christina once a week, you were likely spending more time with her then you spent with most people in your life. That relationship was real."

Oh college, lovely, lovely college. A four-year time span that is filled with many highs and many lows. It is a time where one day you can feel like you are on top of the world and then the next day you are 500 feet below the ground surface.
