Many students, while they may love NC State, do not know about some of the best parts of being part of the Wolfpack. If you are one of these uneducated students, or simply want to become more familiar with our school, there are five crucial things to know.
1. How NC State became the Wolfpack.
At a football game in the 1920s, one reporter who attended the game described the NC State student section as a "pack of wolves." NCSU latched on to this, and we changed from the Red Terror to the Wolfpack.
2. The 1983 NCAA Championship team is the crowning glory of our school.
NC State got the nickname the Cardiac Pack from the '83 team's run to the NCAA championship, and the success that team had is something that should warm the heart of each and every student.
.
3. Jimmy V is an idol.
The coach of the 1983 team was Jimmy Valvano, who may or may not be the best person to have graced the earth. His encouraging words of, "Don't give up, don't ever give up," inspire students to keep studying, keep going, and to never stop believing in our teams. He also won the ESPY award and battled metastatic cancer the last few years of his life.
4. CAMPOUT is a must.
CAMPOUT stems from students camping outside the basketball arena for tickets to the NCSU vs UNC game. Now, students pull an all-nighter on Miller Fields for six loyalty points for basketball and football tickets. CAMPOUT is a lot of fun, and should be done at least once in one's undergraduate career.
5. Bricks are beautiful.
NC State is home to many things. We have wonderful ice cream, exciting sports games, and lots of bricks. Nothing makes State students more upset than hearing someone, especially another NCSU student, say "I don't like all those bricks y'all have." Bricks are beautiful. Accept it or leave.
