When we pick our majors, we are usually studying a subject that reflects our personalities and how we are on the inside. For me, as a communication major, it's pretty obvious that I like to talk and share my views and opinions with the world on a daily basis. However, during the summer when most all of us have a lot more free time than we do when we are in school, it gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our knowledge and personalities away from an academic setting. So if by any chance you are a communication major, you probably do some of these things during the summer.
1. Spend hours perfecting your social media accounts
It is important to stay up to date on current events and to make sure that all profiles are both professional and impressive. It may not seem like much, but our careers may depend on these accounts in the future.
2. Start a blog or website
Just some shameless self-promotion here, but truthfully, there is nothing more impressive than showing future employers that you know how to create and maintain your own website. It can also help improve your writing skills.
3. Apply to a million public relations and marketing internships ... and never hear back
You will probably never hear back even after spending hours applying to different companies. You may never even know if they received your application, but at least you tried. That counts for something, right?
4. Explain to family and friends what your major actually is
We do so much more than just communicate. There is vast number of different fields within communication studies, so it's rare to find two majors that have the same concentration. We also love to publicly speak, whereas all other majors seems to fear the idea of having to speak before an audience. It takes a lot of practice to perfect it.
5. Think about your dream career as a professional public speaker
We spend hours a day learning how to project our thoughts and connect with diverse audiences. What would be better than actually getting to put these skills into action in the real world?
