5 Things College Kids Can Do For FREE

None of us have money, but we should still be able to have some fun.

Everyone knows college students are notorious for never having any money. To some, this feels like a death sentence, because nearly every activity (even eating!) seems to require some form of payment. Especially in the middle of summer, it can seem like there is nothing to do. Thankfully, there are some activities most people are reasonably close to that are free (or nearly free).

1. Hiking

Many areas have hiking trails pretty close by. Many of these are state parks, waterfalls, or lead to beautiful views. It's also a great way to get outside and soak up some sunlight! I personally live within 40 miles of three state parks, and some of the views are completely spectacular, not to mention the smaller trails through the woods right in town. Some areas may charge for parking, but with a fee of $10 at most, splitting that between the car is basically free.

2. Have a fire or movie night

What is more fun than sitting around a fire with your friends? Not much, especially if you have s'mores. Grab a few friends, some lawn chairs, and some wood. Spend an evening outside listening to the crickets, the fire crackling, and the laughter of your friends. You could also spend the night in and watch movies and eat popcorn. Did I mention s'mores?

3. Spend time with family

Especially if you've been away at college, odds are it's been a while since you've seen many of your family members. Maybe, you haven't even seen them since Christmas. Take a day and go spend some time with your grandmother, aunt, or even your mom. If you didn't have your support system, you could never be where you are now. If you're lucky, they'll even buy you lunch!

4. Volunteering

Volunteering can be a lot of fun if you go to the right places. You can volunteer at animal shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, or even just offer to mow your neighbor's lawn for them. While this might not sound terribly fun, it is an incredibly rewarding experience, not to mention it looks great on a resume.

5. Get a job

I know, this is supposed to be a list of fun things to do. However, getting a job not only is free, but you get paid to do it! Sure, flipping burgers or serving guests may not be your idea of a fun time, but it's a lot more rewarding than sitting on the couch and binge watching the latest season of Orange is the New Black (which is another perfectly viable thing to do). Experience is key in the future, and so are connections. So use that free time wisely.

Life as a college student isn't always easy, especially when your GPA is higher than the amount of money in your pocket. However, there are plenty of things to do to pass the time that can be pretty fun. Sure, you may not be able to buy that new pair of shoes at the mall, but you can have some amazing experiences even without money.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
