If you're like me, you live on a budget. What can I say—being a writer, intern, commuter, active member of my sorority and a full-time student offers many financial struggles. Luckily, I live in the suburbs of Whittier. If you're unfamiliar with the city, it is a part of Los Angeles County. However, it's closer to north Orange County then the city of Los Angeles. Whittier is a very cute town that offers many things for anyone on a budget. Whittier was actually named among one of the best places to live in the U.S. It was ranked in the top 100 according to livability.com. You should pay the city I live in a visit, and with my list of affordable things to do on a budget, you and your wallet will leave happy.
1. 5$ Tuesday/Thursday (all showings) at Whittier Village Cinemas
Yes, you read it correctly, you can catch a movie here all day and night two days a week for only $5! With prices going up everywhere, it's very refreshing to have such a great deal. The cute Theater is located in uptown Whittier, and offers a retro vibe that is super charming.
2. Hiking Trails
People from all over Los Angeles come to hike in Whittier. The two most popular trails are the Turnbull Canyon Hiking Trail or the Hellman Park Trail. The trails offer a great workout and many photo-worthy moments. You can even see wildlife there.
3. 99 cent fish Tacos Wednesday!
Tacos Baja offers the best fish tacos Whittier has to offer. I can personally attest to this(I'm the duchess on Yelp). It's a tradition for many to go on Wednesday for its 99 cent special only on Wednesday! Some even call it a weekly Whittier Holliday. It's definitely one of the busiest restaurants on Wednesday. There's two locations, both on the famous Whittier Blvd.
4. Walk and shop at Whittier’s historic uptown district
You might recognize it from the Muppet’s movie or "Disturbia." If you get hungry while you're uptown, check out Whittier’s own old fashion diner, Rocky Colas.
PS: Walk past my alma mater, Whittier High School, and you'll recognize it as the High School from the 1980s sci-fi classic "Back to the Future!"
5. Whittier has a total of 24 historic landmarks in the California Register Of Historical Resources, and some historic buildings in the National Register Of Historic Places
Whittier even has it’s own museum, and is open free to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 p.m to 4 p.m. Historic buildings include The Bailey House that was built in 1868, and Whittier High School. Fun fact: did you know Albert Einstein spoke for Whittier College in the Whittier High School Auditorium?
