What I'll Miss About Bristol Community College During Winter Break

School is very stressful but I am not ready for winter break and I am going to miss quite a lot about it.

I am an active community college student with little-to-no life outside of the borders of my college campuses.

I am active in my college's student governmental body, I work as a tutor at my college, I am an honors student, and I run a club at one of the college's campuses. These activities make me stay engaged and active during the school semesters but often I begin counting down the days until winter break with anticipation for having little to do during the class-free period of the year. Then, the first day of winter break comes around and I realize that I have nothing to do for the next month and a half. Here are the seven things I'm going to miss about my college, Bristol Community College, during the school break.

1. Pay Day

On the Friday after break starts, I'll wake up and quickly notice that I am without paychecks for the winter break. During the school year, I am employed as a tutor for various college subjects and I get paid for it. This is a harsh thing for me to go without, seeing how poorly I manage my money even when I do get paid.

2. Club

At my college, I (along with several other great club officers) organize and run a comic book club where students that share the common interest of comic books meet up and discuss various related topics. Comic books are a passion of mine and it is a great opportunity to talk to and meet up with others who share this passion; however, the club doesn't meet over winter break and I'll be stuck reading comics alone during the break.

3. Friends

Many of my friends are much like me and they spend a vast majority of their time camping out at the campus between classes and often we entertain each other with a game of Magic the Gathering or accompany each other while doing homework. The holidays are filled with family time and trips for many of us and therefore we hardly see each other while out of classes.

4. Faculty and Staff

This is going to sound extremely lame, but the faculty and the staff at every one of the campuses that I attend are tremendously helpful and friendly day after day. I can always count on them for whatever I need and they are also just super nice people to hang around with and talk to.

5. Daily Schedule

The idea of a daily schedule has always been important for me because it keeps me busy and active. School is an effective way to keep me engaged and this is a big thing I will miss. I feel that a lot of people struggle when they have no schedule or routine and I am no exception.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
