5 Things all Out-of-Staters at UMD Understand

Beach week, Baltimore, and HoCo MoCo, and everything in between. Thanks for teaching these to me in-state roommate.

1. The Question

Why did you come to Maryland? What brought you here? This was your first choice? These are questions I get daily from native Marylanders. My typical answer is that I wanted to experience a different part of the country; I’ve lived in the same house in Connecticut my entire life and I needed to get out. That, however, is only part of the reason.

The other reason, I came to Maryland was that it has everything I was looking for in a school. I wanted a campus with a giant green field, aka Mckeldin Mall. I wanted obvious school spirit, and even though it wasn’t tailgate season when I visited I still felt it. And finally, I wanted a place that felt like home, and UMD was that place.

2. Everyone says what county they are from

When I meet someone knew, one of the first things I ask is where they are from. It’s an easy conversation starter, especially when you end up knowing some of the same people, and a thing everyone does in college. If I ask anyone outside of Maryland where they are from they will tell me the state and town they are from, the answer I expected. But when I ask anyone from Maryland where they are from, they will tell me the county they live in. I soon realized how much pride they have in the county they grew up in. From HoCo to PG to MoCo, I will now forever understand what Marylanders are saying when they say these phrases.

3. I know way more about Baltimore than I should

Roland Park, Beth Tfiloh, McDonogh, Park, Boys Latin, and Gillman: only a handful of the Baltimore schools I have learned about since coming to Maryland. I learned everyone knows everyone in Baltimore, no matter what school they went to because at some point, they went to elementary or middle school with that person. I also realized that Baltimore City is different than Baltimore County; previously I thought Baltimore was just Baltimore. Let’s just say, as a girl from the coast of Connecticut, I’ve learned too much about this area of Maryland.

4. Beach Week

What’s beach week you ask? I had the same question. Well, around high school graduation, seniors spend a week in Ocean City, or any other beach town, living it up with their friends and celebrating their graduation. I think I learned about beach week within the first 24 hours of my time at UMD because literally everyone from Maryland, which is most of the school, goes to beach week. It seems like a great way to spend the last few months with your high school friends, and will probably be one of the most memorable weeks of your childhood--I wish I went, if you couldn't tell.

5. Only talk about crabs that are from Maryland

My dad makes the best crab cakes I’ve ever had, but not according to anyone from the Old Line State. When I tried to explain how good they are to anyone from Maryland, I was immediately shut down. “Have you even tried the crab cakes here? No? Oh, just wait and try one, you’ll see.” Maryland is known for its incredible crab, so I don’t really argue with people when they say it’s better in Maryland. I still have yet to try the crab, and when I do I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
