5 Things I Miss About Long Island

Sometimes I really wish I were home

Discover Long Island

I've lived on Long Island for as long as I can remember and there are just some things about this place you just can't forget. Since being away at college, there are definitely things about Long Island that I desperately wish I could bring with me.

1. The Food

Ask any of my friends and they'll say this is one of the things I complain about most when I’m not on the Island. Nothing compares to Long Island pizza or a bacon, egg, and cheese from the deli. I miss going to Ralph’s on the weekend’s with my friends or going to a 24 hour diner at 2:00 AM on a Wednesday. Also, why can’t I find a 7-11 to get a Slurpee when my throat hurts and I’m not on the Island?

2. The Beach

When I’m home I can take a five-minute drive and be at the Long Island Sound. Sure, when I’m at school I’m a two second walk to the lake, but the ocean is a different ball game. When I’m stressed out, I go to the beach and just listen to the waves or just sit and feel the sand between my toes. Going to the ocean just lets me escape for a little while and be present in the environment.

3. The Accent

When I’m at school, people will point out the accent I have on certain words, or just the language I use in general. There are some people I’ve met that don’t believe I’m from Long Island because I don’t have a stereotypical accent, but they can catch it on certain words that I say. At home, people just get it and don’t comment on it, but at school it’s almost an everyday occurrence.

4. The Driving

Sure, I absolutely hate rush hour on Long Island, but at least I can get in my car a drive a short distance to anywhere. When I’m at school, it takes me a half an hour to get to a Walmart or 45 minutes just to get to a Starbucks. And if I want to go to the mall when I’m at school, it’s about an hour and a half drive just to get there. I’m thankful that at home I can drive 20 minutes to the mall, or at least 15 to the nearest Target.

5. The Summers

I remember growing up and thinking there was nothing to do, or, if there was, I would need the money that I didn’t have. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized there are so many things to do for free. Some of my favorite summer memories are just walking around Port Jeff or Northport with my friends, hiking the Greenbelt Trail with my step-dad, or walking from the Kings Park Bluff to Sunken Meadow Beach.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
