We are a country, a generation obsessed with the idea of more. There rarely seems to be a time when we're satisfied. We're always searching for something better, something more; whether that be more money, more clothes, a better job, better technology...The wanting feels endless. It is tiresome; always wanting something we don't have is exhausting. Even Thanksgiving is about more food and the following day: Black Friday, when we can buy more things (for half the price, yet still more things). We tend to forget the good things, the things we actually have. We are a country and generation so obsessed with what we don't have that we ignore what we do have.
This Thanksgiving there are so many things to be thankful for, that we take for granted every day. We only need to take a moment and let ourselves be grateful for them. Here are a few things to say an extra "thanks," for this Thursday:
1. Family
Maybe your family is so traditional that it is boring, or maybe it is the farthest thing from 'standard' either way we all have a family, regardless of who we factor into the equation. They are there for us no matter what, which is probably the main reason why we forget to thank them when we should, but either way they have helped us through some pretty hard stuff and deserve that 'thank you' this Thanksgiving.
2. Friends
Some of your friends are practically family, I know some of mine are. That is probably why it is easy to forget about them when we are counting the list of things we do have in this life. They also have seen you at your worst and they're still here, so be grateful for that because unlike family they don't have to stay by some blood obligation.
3. Education
Higher education is a privilege not a right. Say that one more time: higher education is a privilege not a right. It seems like everyone goes to college these days, but that is the farthest thing from true. This Thanksgiving say thank you to your full class load and overpriced textbooks because there are some people who would give anything to be sitting in your seat during your two-hour-lecture.
4. Pets
You may have one, you may have two or more. This Thanksgiving say thanks to your pets. They have listened to you cry, scream, laugh, and watched you at your worst, but still greet you with excitement each time you open the door.
5. Health
Life may feel like it is falling apart right now. We are on the brink of finals week; class work is crazy, planners are full, and our bank accounts are on a downward spiral as holiday season approaches. It is going to seem like the world is ending, or at least close to ending within the next couple of weeks, but if you are young and healthy then that's all we can ask for right now.
So, you don't have the iPhone 7 or that new Michael Kors bag you wanted... but you have much more than you remember to say 'thank you' for everyday.
