I love TED talks. Mostly because I view them as productive procrastination. I learn something from each one (productive), but I am also avoiding my homework due the next day (procrastination). Instead of watching hours of Netflix, I watch hours of TED talks.
More often than not I find some talks that are really relevant to my everyday life, especially as a college student. I try to incorporate these five TED talks into my actions everyday. They all have an important message that every college student can benefit from. I hope you find a message that is meaningful to you! All of these TED talks are available on YouTube (I included the links below) or you can download the TED app to you phone or tablet (it is free). Happy productive procrastination!
Tim Urban: Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator
Tim Urban is a blogger for the blog “Wait But Why” and is a long time procrastinator. He tries to tackle the question of why that is. We all know it is not ideal and we should just get all our work done right away, but why is that so hard? This TED talk goes through the hilarious journey of procrastination and is good for any college student that struggles with getting homework done. You will probably still be a procrastinator at the end of this talk, but at least you will know more about it. Please don’t procrastinate on watching this talk, do it now!
Emilie Wapnick: Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling
Emilie Wapnick is a career coach and tries to tackle the question "what do you want to be when you grow up?" However, a lot of us don’t have one set answer. We have too many interests.Don't worry, this is completely okay, especially as college students. Wapnick calls these people “multipotentialites”. This TED talk is perfect for those of us that still don’t know what we want to do or what our calling is. Wapnick encourages everyone to celebrate these interests and only good things will come.
John Green: The Nerd’s Guide to Learning Everything Online
John Green is the author of “The Fault of Our Stars” and does video blogging with his brother Hank on their YouTube channel Vlogbrothers. Green talks about how the internet is a great tool for learning, especially for those people who don’t learn well in the traditional classroom setting. He introduces the huge learning community that is present on YouTube. So for the college student that has always wanted to know more on a topic, needs background knowledge for a presentation, or just enjoys learning random facts, this TED talk is for you.
Judson Brewer: A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit
Judson Brewer is a psychiatrist and addiction expert. This TED talk definitely relates to everyone since we all probably have a bad habit that we would like to break. Judson looks at how people get addicted to certain things in the first place, which he claims involves the simple process of trigger, behavior, reward. However, he takes a completely different approach on how to actually break the habit … mindfulness. While his talk mostly focuses on smoking, it can applied to any bad habit that you want to change. Even if that behavior is procrastination (see above).
Sarah Kay: If I Should Have a Daughter …
Sarah Kay is a spoken word poet and the founder of Project VOICE. In this TED talk Kay focuses on how she uses poetry to express herself and how she tries to figure out the world around her. Kay encourages everyone to express themselves in anyway they want, just by following three simple steps. Then by doing that you will grow, take risks and challenge yourself all throughout life. This talk beautifully illustrates trying to find your place in the world, which all college students could use a little help with. Plus, she shares two beautiful spoken poems that you don’t want to miss out on!
