We're now almost 20 games into the NBA season and the one sure thing is that there are only four true title contenders: the Warriors, Spurs, Cavaliers, and Clippers. This leaves the rest of the league looking at their future. With one of the most talented freshman class in recent history set to enter the 2017 NBA Draft, there is no better time than now to start tanking.
Here are five teams that should follow Sam Hinkie's ways:
1. Dallas Mavericks
Current Record: 2- 13 (last in Western Conference)
After signing Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut this offseason most expected the Mavs' to at least contend for a playoff spot but their aging roster has been plagued with injuries. Mark Cuban has said before that he would consider tanking and this is the perfect opportunity. They haven't been able to attract star free agents so this slow start could help them land their next franchise centerpiece.
2. Washington Wizards
Current Record: 5-10 (12th in Western Conference)
The Wizards made the playoffs two seasons ago but have been on a downward spiral ever since. John Wall has continued to shine as one of the best point guards in the Eastern Conference on their poorly constructed roster that doesn't have any difference makers other than his backcourt mate Bradley Beal who's struggling to stay healthy.
3. New Orleans Pelicans
Current Record: 6-11 (12th in Western Conference)
Like the Mavericks, the Pelicans aren't able to lure free agents to New Orleans so they have to build through the draft. The problem is that Anthony Davis has been so great that he carries the team to enough wins to keep them from finishing in the bottom three.
4. Miami Heat
Current Record:5-11 (13th in Western Confernce)
Miami's Big Three is long gone with LeBron back in Cleveland, Wade in Chicago and Bosh dealing with blood clots. Riley gave Hassan Whiteside max money to anchor the paint and know he needs to take the next step to get the Heat back atop the Eastern Conference. Tanking this year could potentially land them Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum or Miles Bridges.
5. Sacremento Kings
Current Record: 6-10 (11th in Western Conference)
Sacremento hasn't made the playoffs since 2006 and they won't make it this season either. DeMarcus Cousins is one of the best centers in the league but now it's best for him and the Kings organization to part ways.
