Getting to the gym during the summer can be really tough. There is a constant struggle between wanting to lay on the couch after being in the sun all day and still wanting to be healthy. Luckily, during the summer the weather is nice, so some alternative activities that keep you in shape are not so painful.
1. Walk or Run
This one is typical, but once the weather gets nice, going for a run outside is almost enjoyable. You can run on the boardwalk, around your neighborhood, or even on the beach! If you are not exactly a runner per say, you can also go for a nice, long walk with your dog or with a friend. Walking and running and very effective ways to get in shape, and the weather being nice just makes it that much easier to get out there and actually do it.
2. Hiking
Hiking can be so much fun if you plan for it properly. Wearing the right clothes (and shoes) and packing a lot of water and snacks makes hiking enjoyable. If you go with some friends, hiking is a great way to have a tough workout while simultaneously having a blast.
3. Swimming
Sometimes the weather is just too damn hot, and the pool is much needed. Obviously, everyone loves to float around the pool and tan, but swimming can actually be a great workout. Swimming laps or doing resistance workouts in the pool are low impact and effective forms of exercise. Swimming is another summer activity that is hard work and enjoyable at the same time.
4. Biking
Biking is another activity that is so effective for staying in shape. Also a low impact exercise, biking is really good for you and honestly just easier to do than running sometimes. Of course biking is difficult, but it is a lot more fathomable to think about doing a five mile bike ride than a five mile run. Biking allows you to move at your own pace, but quicker than you would on foot. A lot of places have nice bike trails that are really cool to ride on.
5. Sports
Instead of just going to the gym and doing a typical workout, you could always get a couple people together for some friendly competition. Get a group of friends to play volleyball, basketball, kickball, or anything else you find fun and challenging. Being with other people and giving yourself an objective…to win…makes pushing yourself beyond limitations obtainable. As hard as it may be to believe, sports make people forget they are exercising because they are so immersed in the game.
