5 Struggles Of Having A Thanksgiving Birthday

Parents are always happy when their child is born near a holiday. If you were born on or near Valentine's day, they'll tell you it's because you're so loved. If you were born near the 4th of July, they'll tell you that the fireworks show they put on every year is specifically for you. For Thanksgiving, they'll say it was to give them something to give thanks for and for Christmas, they'll say you were the best gift of all. For the kid, things aren't always so peachy. If you were born near a holiday, then you will totally relate to these struggles of having a holiday birthday.

1. You Can Never Schedule A Birthday Party

Holidays are a very busy time for every family. The good part about having a holiday family is that you'll see all your relatives. They may just be showing up because it's a holiday but you can pretend it's all for you. You friends, on the other hand, will be just as busy as your family and they will be spending that time with their own relatives out of town. Scheduling a party for yourself is just not in the books unless you want to do it several weeks before or after.

2. Your Birthday Was Always During School Break

During grade school, all your friends got to bring cupcakes to class so that people would sing happy birthday and give them cards, they would get a free lunch from the cafeteria and special treatment all around. In college, everyone gets to go out to parties to celebrate their birthdays and have dinner with their friends. If you have a holiday birthday, it probably falls within a break and you aren't anywhere near your friends during those times and you don't get that day of special treatment.

3. You Have To Beg For A Birthday Cake

If one more person brings a pumpkin pie with birthday candles to a Thanksgiving dinner and calls it my birthday cake, I might throw the pie at the wall. I don't want those cupcakes with the holiday themed plastic rings from the grocery store either. I want plain old chocolate birthday cake with my name on it, not overshadowed by a pie!

4. Everything Is Closed On Your Birthday

It had always been my dream to get a tattoo on my 16th birthday. Unfortunately for me, the year I turned 16, my birthday fell exactly on Thanksgiving. Unlike Valentine's day, Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where practically nothing in the whole U.S. is open because it is a national holiday, so I had to wait to get my tattoo until 2 days later. And forget about having a Sweet 16 party.

5. You Still Have To Help Cook

Just because it's your birthday doesn't mean you can sit around and enjoy the day your way. Thanksgiving is still happening and your mom still needs an extra pair of hands to help cook. You want to pout and ask to be pampered because it's your birthday, but you know that family and pilgrims come higher than you in order of importance.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
