5 Struggles Of Being Vegan In College

Anyone who is vegetarian or vegan knows that, after the first few weeks of adjusting, it feels awesome to know how impactful and beneficial the switch is for a whole bunch of reasons. But being in college and staying committed to the lifestyle is no easy task. Here are just a few of the struggles of being vegan on campus.

1. No options.

Some days all you want is a simple and delicious meal- yet the only entree options that aren’t entirely made of meat include some sad looking carrots and the salad bar. It’s a hard life.

2. The salad bar.

Okay, who doesn’t love a good salad? And of course I appreciate there being a salad option at most hours of the day, but come on. Limp lettuce and the same two toppings every day gets old fast. Some variety would make my life better, and the freshman fifteen much easier to avoid.

3. “Is that vegan?”

Yes, I get it that you are not a vegan or vegetarian so you don’t know about the specific ingredients that we choose not to eat- but if I am vegan, and I am eating something, then yes it is vegan. Thanks for checking up on me, though!

4. Everyone thinking that vegan equals healthy.

I wish. People don’t realize that there is the same amount of junk food that’s vegan that there is non-vegan. I’ll be in my room eating dark chocolate and Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy if you need me.

5. Munchies.

Getting back from going out on a late Friday night/ very early Saturday morning when all of your non-vegan friends are ordering pizza. This is the truest test of strength, but sometimes you just have to give in and order a cheese Domino's pizza that you just know isn’t going to satiate you. But hey, you knew what you were getting into when you went vegan.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
