As you probably figured out, I am a music education major. And let me tell you, it's so worth it. But there are some moments where it doesn't feel worth it. And those are the struggles that almost every music education major feels. Here are 5 of those struggles:
1. Secondary Instruments
Learning a secondary instrument SUCKS sometimes, especially when it's really hard for you. This for me was flute. I'm terrible at it.
2. Lesson Plans
Like, how do you even write lesson plans? What is this about national standards? And what even is common core? And how do you assess kids? Like...it's not fun.
3. Practicing
As a music education major, you still have to practice your primary instrument, as well as your secondaries. Honestly, sometimes when I practice, I want to throw my clarinet out the window. Other times, I feel really accomplished. But most of the time, I just want to throw my instrument out the window.
4. Crazy Schedules
If you're a music education major, you are extremely familiar with what a crazy, hectic schedule feels like. One semester, I had classes from 9 am all the way until 6:30 pm. With one break. And that was it. I feel like sometimes people underestimate how busy we are...but we are truly busy.
5. Sleep
Honestly, I always manage to get a good night's sleep, but most music education majors I know have pulled more all-nighters than anyone I have ever met. They're either up writing lesson plans, finishing a project, or practicing, because they didn't have time to do it during the day.
Even though we constantly are struggling to get through the semester, in the end, we all know that being a music education major is worth it.
