Finding clarity in such a busy and tumultuous world can be difficult. Ideas are slung in every direction and people pressure you choose what side to stand on. It may seem near impossible to clear your mind and find what is truly important to you, but you can take some simple steps to start the process.

1. Declutter your living space.

The feeling of a clean, junk-free home is fantastic. A great rule of thumb that I learned from my grandma is to get rid of anything that doesn’t give you joy. Aside from necessities and the basics, all you really need in your life are things that will make you smile. A baseball caught by your dad and signed by a player can stay, but that shirt that you wore on your first day of school in the 7th grade is out of here.

2. Start taking time to meditate.

When trying to navigate which courses you should take in school along with all of the other choices you will ultimately to make, it's important to remember that you have the ultimate say in what happens with your life. You decide how you should spend your time. Whether that is binge watching Netflix or training for a marathon each morning, taking the time to remember what is important to you and clearing your mind is vital to maintaining sanity. Yoga, kickboxing, reading, whatever helps give energy and clarity to your mind should be high on your list of daily tasks.

3. Channel your thoughts and feelings.

Maybe you have always wanted to start a blog. Maybe you need to start taking cooking classes. You can influence entire communities of people with fundraisers. Create a new way for yourself to look at life. Find out what you want to do and do what makes you happy. I personally feel the need to write out my thoughts with pen so I can see right in front of me why certain feelings exist.

4. Focus on your relationships.

Friendship is an amazing thing. When you have more time to focus on your relationships with your loved ones, use it. When all is said and done, your friends and family are all you have. The people that will stand by you no matter what choices you end up making are the ones you need to cultivate and cherish. When you make it big in life and find yourself exactly where you want to be, don't forget to take time just for those people that didn't let you down.

5. Put it into perspective.

Although it can be tricky at times, putting things into perspective can always help you get away from whatever current situation that you're in and find a way to shape your life in a clearer, more uplifting way. No matter how low life might seem to take you, remember there is always up, and in opposition and equally as important, down. Remember that if you are reading this, you have access to a computer. You most likely know where your next meal is coming from and you have the ability to eat it. That puts you in a small percentage of the world who actually has all of those opportunities.

Declutter, meditate, express you feelings, focus on relationships, and find perspective. Use these 5 tools regularly to gain a sense of sanity and peace in your life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
