5 Steps To Get Over That Hump
Alexandre Vanier

It happens to the best of us, after a long week of hard work the weekend comes around and you lose all motivation whatsoever. You suddenly feel like doing nothing and want to cancel all of your weekend plans. Even the thought of clearing your calendar sounds like too much work. It feels like it would be almost impossible to do anything, and why would you want to? You have no desire or care in the world to do things.

When you fall into this sort of down and out mood it is incredibly difficult to find your way out of it. I know because that’s how I have been feeling lately. One thing I’ve learned is that there are a few ways to attempt to get yourself out of it. If you combine them for an enjoyable work free few hours of lazy time, you just might find that lost motivation of yours.

1. Clean clean clean!

The first step is quite possibly the hardest but, it is very very important. Clean your surroundings and straighten up your room. Put away anything that should be away and clear that desk of yours. It will be easier to motivate yourself later if your room is clean.

2. Toss that to-do list.

Okay well maybe don’t actually toss it since you most likely have important items to remember on it, but put it aside for now. When trying to calm down the last thing on your mind should be your impending list of tasks. Forget about that for now and clear your mind.

3. Find something to relax you.

Light a candle in your room and lay under the covers of your bed to watch a movie. Or if you are a bath taker, take one. Another alternative would be to listen to some calming music and take a nap. Whatever your poison is, take some time for just you. The only thing you need to do is set a time limit. Give yourself ample time to relax but don’t let this take over your whole day.

4. Time for some pump up jams.

Once you’re done relaxing and have a clear, refocused mind blast that music. Nothing like a good, motivational, fun dance party to get you in the mood to do anything. You will feel like a super hero after this and ready to hit the books or do whatever you have to.

5. Find that to do list and set up a system.

Keep yourself happy and amused with a reward system to accompany your to do list. Whether your system includes snacks, netflix, or music find a way that works for you to keep you motivated.

There you have it, five ways to get yourself out of that motivationless slump and turn yourself into a productive homework machine.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
