Cyberbullying is a big problem in this day and age. A lot of teenagers, and even adults, are bullied over the internet. The bullies find it easier because it is behind the keys and a screen, so they don't see how much their words are hurting another person.
But there are some steps that you can take when being bullied online to help the situation
1. Stand up for yourself
Tell the person saying those hurtful things to you that the words really do hurt. You can also try telling them that it isn't right to say things like they are about other people. But remember to stay calm, and to not say hurtful things to the bully, when standing up for yourself.
2. Reach out to a friend or loved one
Tell a friend or loved one about the bullying, and be honest with them about what the bully is saying (No matter how hurtful it is or how uncomfortable to repeat). And remember it is okay if you get upset and even cry, it is an emotional experience to be bullied- and it being online doesn't make it any less emotional.
3. Speaking with a professional
Whether you speak with your mentor or a counselor or therapist, I recommend speaking with someone who isn't as close to you as a family or a friend about the situation, so you get an unbiased opinion about what you should do about the situation.
Another possibility you could do is see if there is a support group for those that have been cyber bullied, so you won't feel so alone and you will be able to talk about it with people who have gone through it .
4. Report it to the social media site
Whether it is on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter there is a way to report the bullying. Reporting it to the social media site will most likely get the account shutdown. Though if you are threatened I would report it to the police as soon as possible.
5. Reminding yourself of the truth about yourself
You have to tell yourself that even though those words hurt, they are not true. You have to remind yourself of the good inside of you. Whether that it is by putting sticky notes on your mirror or pep talks to yourself, just whatever you have to do so that you flush the negative out and fill it with positive words.
