It's that time of year again! The semester has come to a close and we are all home for winter break. Winter break is a great time to relax and recharge before the upcoming semester, but if you're like me, it can get kind of lonely. So here are my stages of missing my roommates.

1. The goodbye

You all say your goodbyes as your finals end and you are excited to go home and see your respective families. You know you will miss each other, but it hasn't quite set in yet.

2. Enjoying your alone time

If you're like me, you need alone time every once in awhile. I love my roommate, but there's not much privacy in a 10x9 box. This is your time to walk around your room naked, shower without shoes, and do everything you're not usually able to do while at college.

3. Boredom

The novelty of being home for the holidays has worn off and you realize how nice it is to always have people to talk to.

4. The feels

Your friends at home don't understand the inside jokes that you and your roommates share. You find that you're explaining yourself when you're talking about them. You find yourself texting them that you miss them, looking back at old pictures, and remembering the times you all experienced together. You can't wait to see them again, because FaceTime is not doing it justice.

5. The reunion

After all of the excitement of Christmas, you're ready to go back to college. You realize how much you appreciate having your roommates around and you never want to leave them again.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
