The 5 Stages Of Grief In Doing College Assignments

Why did I do this to myself again?

Isn’t it funny how all professors seem to think assigning all of our big assignments in the same week is a great idea? NEWSFLASH: IT’S NOT A GREAT IDEA!

I just spent the past week of my life writing papers. No, I seriously had an 8-10 page paper due this week along with the one I just finished up, which turned out to be 21 pages of garbage. I also had another assignment due, which was 7 pages.

If you’re like me, you’re a procrastinator. You see, I probably should have already been working on those assignments weeks ago, but I didn’t. I started all three of them this week, and they’re all due by Friday. What can I say? I’m ready for Thanksgiving break.

This is essentially the 5 stages of grief while writing the papers that you’ve been procrastinating all semester.

Denial

The first stage of any grieving process is denial. In this stage, you don’t even want to think about writing these papers. You basically sit around watching Netflix and creeping on your ex-best friend’s Facebook page like you always do. All thoughts equal to “YOU’RE FINE,” even though you are the furthest away from being “fine.”

Anger

This is the stage where you decide you hate all your professors. They obviously plan these assignments out with one another at the beginning of the semester because they want to hurt us and stress us out more than we already are. It’s going to be their fault when we make bad on these papers, right? I’m blaming them.

Bargaining

This is the stage where you are almost coming to terms with the fact that you have to get these assignments done. Maybe you think, “If I can get this paper done tonight, I’ll stay home and start on the other one.” Maybe you ask God to help you out, which probably sounds something like this: “If you just let me get done with this paper, I promise I won’t go out next week.” You’re totally lying, but hey, you’ve got to get this paper done.

Depression

This is where you think there is no way you’re getting all of these assignments done. Essentially, you’re over it, and just want to go back to watching TV and creeping on Facebook like you normally do. It’s not like you really need this class or anything.

Acceptance

Ok, last stage. You’ve decided to get off the couch and start working on these papers again. They have to get done, regardless of how you feel.

You knew this was coming. These assignments have been listed in the syllabus all semester, but you've been casually ignoring them and hoping they'll go away. They didn't go away!

You'll get them written, don't worry. You may not get the same grade as your classmates who started on their assignments weeks or months before you did, but C's get degrees and that's all that matters. Employers don't ask for your GPA, they just want to see your degree.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
