Pretty much everyone likes or loves watching movies, but everyone has their own genre that they prefer to watch over others. For some, it's the romantic comedy, for others it's action-packed, and then there are those that just love being on the edge of their nerves while watching the horror-slasher films. For me, it just depends who's in the movie and what the story line is about. But one genre I know that I always fall for is the "sport movie." So what do I mean by that exactly? Remember the Titans stands out as well as We Are Marshall. Both these films are great and took a toll on our emotions. I don't know why, but sports movies hold a certain appeal and have many life lessons packed within. So in no particular order, here's a list of five sports films I've enjoyed watching.
1. Forever Strong
Released on September 26, 2008, Forever Strong follows the life of a high school rugby athlete who gets a DUI, spends a year in a juvenile boys' home and ends up playing for his school's rival rugby team. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, this film is based on actual events. Forever Strong is currently on Netflix.
2. 4 Minute Mile
Released August 1, 2014, 4 Minute Mile may be a fictional story, but it breeds inspiration and dedication to the sport of running. The film focuses on a high schooler who does drug running for his older brother, but wants to make it to state for track. Again, this film is a tear-jerker but ultimately inspirational and moving. 4 Minute Mile is currently on Netflix.
3. Bend it Like Beckham
Starring Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Bend it Like Beckham was released August 1, 2003. In this soccer film, the daughter of an orthodox Sikh goes against the traditionalism of her family and pursues the dream of her soccer career.
4. Double Teamed
It might be a Disney Channel Original Movie, but Double Teamed was based off a true story of twin sisters that had their start in volleyball, but switched over to become basketball players at their new school. Released January 18, 2002, this film captured the era of Disney Channel movies that people actually wanted to watch. Other Disney Channel movies that focused on sports include Full Court Miracle, Jump In!, Johnny Tsunami, The Luck of the Irish, Motocrossed, Go Figure, Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-off, Going to the Mat, and Right on Track.
5. Cinderella Man
Possibly one of the most well-known boxing movies, Cinderella Man stars Russell Crowe as James J. Braddock. Set during the Great Depression, this film follows the true story of the heavyweight boxing champion. Released June 3, 2005.
I'm not quite sure what it is about sports movies, but they always bring some sense of inspiration, motivation, and dedication into our lives. There are so many more great sports films out there and I would highly encourage you to watch them. You never know when you're going to find that hidden gem.
