The dawn of October marks the dawn of Halloween season--that wonderful time of year featuring haunted houses, scary stories, and orange pumpkins galore.
Unfortunately, the month's sunny start can make it tough to really feel the spooky spirit--but not to worry: If the halloween hype hasn't hit you yet, these 5 eerie films are sure to give you all the ~creepy~ vibes!
IT (2017)
GiphyWhile "IT" isn't the scariest movie on this list, it definitely makes #1 for being the most Halloween-y. "IT" is the perfect mix of scary, spooky and Halloween-y—with a particularly terrifying clown, plenty of blood, an unsuspecting little town, and a band of determined children all involved, what's not to love?

The Shining (1980)
GiphyI would honestly classify this one as scary, rather than spooky—but it's so good It just had to make the list! Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, "The Shining" follows aspiring writer and former alcoholic Jack Torrance, who takes a job as caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel—and is slowly driven insane by the spirits that reside within it.

The Exorcist (1973)
GiphyEveryone's favorite classic horror film and a must-see if you're one for psychological horror. With it's unnervingly pseudo-realistic plot, "The Exorcist" is truly one of the spookiest movies I've ever seen.
My recommendation? Watch this one armed with some Halloween candy and a good group of friends.

The Purge (2013)
GiphyWhat would happen if all crime—murder included—was legal for one night a year? If you can't imagine the answer to that question (and even if you can), "The Purge" franchise will answer it for you. You'll find yourself perched on the edge of your seat by the time the credits roll on these fast-paced, uncanny films. Perfect for both the Halloween lover who wants to watch just one, and the horror enthusiast who'll binge watch them all!

Coraline (2009)
GiphyFeaturing a curious girl whose explorations lead her to a world of twisted fantasy, unconventional children's tale "Coraline" boasts some seriously Halloween-y vibes. With its whimsical characters and surprisingly sinister twists, the film is a perfect amuse-bouche for people new to the world of creepy cinema. Don't let the fact that "Coraline" is animated deter you--in my opinion, LAIKA studio's characteristic animation style somehow only serves to make this movie spookier!
