There are some films that don't make it as big (or wasn't meant to go on the big screens) but they are worth the watch. There are many small films that should be watched but here are 5 of my personal favorites.
1. "Candy" (2006).
"Candy" is an Australian film made in 2006 and is directed by Neil Armfield. It stars Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish. It is about two young lovers, Candy (Abbie Cornish) and Dan (Heath Ledger) who are both addicted to heroin. It is about their downward spiral from drug addiction and failures at getting clean. The film is beautifully made and the acting is amazing. It is a sad and very real interpretation of what addiction looks like. I would advise caution because this film does show the drug use and could cause a relapse for any former addicts.
2. "Call Me By Your Name" (2017).
The film "Call Me By Your Name" is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet. It is based on the summer of 1983 in Lombardy, Italy. Elio Perlman (Timothee Chalamet) meets Oliver (Armie Hammer), a doctoral student who is interning with Elio's father. As Oliver and Elio get closer, a summer romance grows between them and it becomes a summer they will remember forever. This film was beautifully made in every way. The acting was amazing, the scenery is beautiful and the soundtrack adds to the beauty. One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.
3. "The Fundamentals of Caring" (2016).
"The Fundamentals of Caring" is a Netflix original directed by Rob Burnett. It stars Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts and Selena Gomez. A writer named Ben (Paul Rudd) retires after a tragedy happens and becomes a disabled teen named Trevor's caregiver. They decide to go on a road-trip together and their love/hate friendship grows. This film is well made and the acting is amazing. It is a funny, warm film and is worth the watch.
4. "White Girl" (2016).
"White Girl" is directed by Elizabeth Wood and stars Morgan Saylor. It is about a college girl named Leah (Morgan Saylor) who spends the summer in New York City. She falls for a guy named Blue (Brian Marc) who she just met and goes through extreme measures to get him out of jail. Leah goes through a lot of partying and gets a lot of bad habits and situations during her summer stay. This movie is also another one to give caution too, just like the previous movie "Candy." "White Girl" can be currently found on Netflix.
5. "Kill Your Darlings" (2013).
This film is set in 1944 and directed by John Krokidas. It stars Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan. Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) is a young poet who is trying to win the affections of his classmate Lucien Carr (DeHaan). This film includes poetry, romance and later a murder. It is a very aesthetically pleasing film and includes unique acting from both Radcliffe and DeHaan.
All of these films are beautifully written and shows great talent when it comes to the actors/actresses. The unique ideas of these films is partially what makes them so golden.
