From the disconsolate to the delighted, slam poems typically express a poet's personal anecdote or life experience. The power and sincerity in these poems is admirable, as each poet utilizes their story telling capabilities, mixing metaphors with memories to captivate his or her audience. The following five poems serve as strong examples of what I consider to be excellent slam poetry.

1. "Scars/To the New Boyfriend" - Rudy Francisco

Born and raised in San Diego, Rudy Francisco never ceases to amaze me with his thought-provoking pieces. He usually writes about the topic of love, and the turbulent roller coaster ride that encompasses its beginning, middle, and end. "Scars/To the New Boyfriend" was the first poem I had the pleasure of hearing and I was immediately hooked. You can find more of his musings in his latest book, No Gravity.

2. "21" - Patrick Roche

3. "Dear Straight People" - Denice Frohman

4. "OCD" - Neil Hilborn

5. "Lost Voices" - Darius Simpson and Scout Bostley
