5 Simple Ways to Improve Your Everyday Life

1. Meditating

The purpose of meditation is to relax the mind to a level at which clarity comes almost naturally. The struggles and situations of everyday life make it difficult for the average person to think with a relaxing level of clarity as they juggle the millions of past, present, and future thoughts that can invade their brain. Taking 5-10 minutes in the morning or afternoon to breathe and relax the mind and body can lead to an improvement in mood, thinking, and overall health. Try apps like Meditation Studio, Headspace, and Calm to get you started on your meditation routine.

2. 2. Reading

A common quote about reading is that "reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body". This is true, but even more, reading is the gateway to knowledge which can be more than just a brain exercise. Reading allows you to expand your mind in order to understand more perspectives and to create a deeper world view based on experiences other than those that are your own personal experiences. Readers have sharper minds, this is true, but few people realize the benefit that a book a week can bring in conversation, thoughtfulness, relaxation, and overall understanding. The best way to start reading is to start a book list based on your interests and spread out using books that are similar to the ones you are most interested in. Amazon, eBay, and your local or school library are your best friends in this endeavor.

3. Slowing Down/Thinking

Some times we just get busy. Some times all that our mind can do is run. Some times our minds are so clouded and filled to the brim that we can barely function mentally or physically. This is primarily because, as people, we move entirely too fast. People see both their long-term and short-term goals as things that need to be immediately accomplished and therefore, people believe that if they are not in a rush that they are missing out on accomplishing their goals. This isn't the case. Taking your time, slowing down, breathing, and thinking can help in the more efficient completion of goals as you allow the thoughts to come naturally rather than struggling to pull them out.

4. Relaxing

Don't do too much. Take some time to relax. Not everything is a big deal and the bigger a deal that you make out of small things the more that you allow those small things to affect your life in a larger way.

5. Exercising

Many people sleep on the positive effects of exercise beyond improvement of physical health. Exercise helps for you to think more clearly, gives more energy, and encourages healthy food and water consumption habits. Another misconception about exercise is that you have to exercise for hours a day to see the positive effects of exercise. Most exercise experts say that 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a tremendous difference in overall health. Start out with a small cardio plan and work up to however strenuous of a workout plan you want. If you stay consistent, you will see improvement to your everyday feeling.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
