When I sat down to write my article for this week, I was drawing a blank. I felt so occupied with other things that my mind wouldn't allow me to write. I sat there, staring at my laptop, the cursor blinking. Then I thought: why don't I write about this?
Sometime's you just can't write. Here are a few tips I've learned that might help crush your temporary writer's block.
1. Write about what's affecting you.
Do what I'm doing: write about what's going on in your life what you're struggling with. Using your own personal problems or feelings is a great way to come up with an idea.
2. Go outside.
What may be as simple as walking out of your apartment can do wonders. Nature can bring out story ideas. Sometimes staying in a little boxed space can actually hurt you rather than help you.
3. Write down three things you see.
Look at your surroundings, write down the first three things you see and go from there. It can generate some sort of idea. These three things might make you think of other related topics. It's all about getting something down on paper to start with.
4. Start bullet-listing.
Don't allow yourself to think too much. Just start listing topics in bullet points and you're bound to find something that can be turned into a story. Don't worry about writing something down that's stupid. Even if you think it's not usable, write it down anyway. The point is to not think about it and let it just happen.
5. Just write something.
Something I personally struggle with is refusing to write until I feel inspired. That doesn't always work. Sometimes you just need to buckle down and write anything.
