Have you ever found yourself researching the lore of particular games, watching Mat-Pat's theories on that game, and then discussing with others about the little Easter eggs in the game? If you were wondering if this is you, here are five signs that you're too deep in a fandom.
1) Did you figure out the timeline?
Now, sometimes the time lines are very simple; clearly the first game is first in the timeline, then the second game, etc, etc. But other times, it's more like you memorized the Zelda timeline and you realize that there's no easy way of explaining it to people who have not also put in that same amount of effort towards truly learning the game. Once you figured out the timeline though, it's like every game you've played makes sense. It's very rare that a game will tell you if it is in chronological order, but usually focusing on Easter eggs and the real story of the video game, you can tell how it fits into a timeline.
2) You have your own theories on the video game
Every Five Nights at Freddy's fan knows this struggle; the game comes out and the first thing we do is try to theorize about every little Easter egg and new animatronic. This can happen for many games, but you start to really put together a story-line for the game even if they only gave you little bits of the actual story. This is the best because everyone in the fandom will share their own theories and eventually you find the story-line.
3) You've watched other people play the games
Markiplier, Game-theory, Dawko, 8-bit gaming, Razzbowski, and others; we've all watched them at least once do a game play of it. This gives us an idea of how the game is set up, without playing through it yet. Which can be easier because they will show you what not to do while playing the game later on.
4) You've tried playing the games based on the game-play you've watched
Now that you've watched your favorite Youtuber play through the game at least a couple times, you feel prepared to play through it yourself. You get all set up and you find yourself actually remembering little details you saw someone do, and you try to accomplish those details yourself. Some will tell you, you're spending too much time on little details, but you know that if their were meaningless, then why would they be put into the game.
5) No matter how many times you watch videos on that game, you never get tired of it
It doesn't matter if someone posts two videos or ten videos on the game, you will always be interested and want to know more about it's background or its history. That's the best feeling, is when you want to be so developed in a game, that it never gets boring. That is very important when it comes to being developed into a game, that what seems silly and time consuming for others; brings you the most joy.
No matter how deeply into a video game you are, the most important part is that you are happy when playing these games and that you are as involved as you want to be. Don't let anyone tell you, you are too invested into a game, because that is never true. You just have more information about the game you are investing your time with, which is a great quality of anyone who plays video games.
