1. Being relieved that you're not the youngest on campus anymore.
The excitement that filled your body walking onto campus in August this year, completely at ease, was such a nice feeling. No more being scared of upperclassmen giving you wrong directions or being told made up traditions only the freshmen are gullible enough to believe. Now, you can walk to class knowing exactly where you're going and not silently asking yourself if you've already passed by that building...twice.
2. But upperclassmen still don't appreciate your status as a sophomore.
We know how exciting it is to be familiar with campus, but for some reason we're still slightly frowned upon. Sure we're all chill with juniors and seniors, but don't think I don't know you're judging me just the tiniest bit. But it's okay, I'll just pretend like you weren't in my shoes less than two years ago, which brings me to my next point.
3. We like to forget that we were freshmen only a year ago.
We find ourselves saying way too often "That's such a freshman thing" or hiding our giggles when witnessing a lost freshman. I hate to break it to all of you guys (including myself) but we were just like them only a short year ago. We should help them out, God knows I would have liked a sophomore guide last year, and you can giggle to yourself in your head while you are secretly glad you're not them.
4. But we do like to forget that the best years of our lives are halfway over.
Thinking about graduating and being a real adult makes me want to throw up, so we might as well live it up in college while we can. Choosing my own schedule and going out to frat parties is such a privilege sometimes taken for granted, but now is when we learn to enjoy sleeping late on our easy days and not having adult responsibilities in the real world. After we grab our diplomas, it's goodbye frat parties and hello debt...so excuse me while I stay out until 3am this weekend.
5. Feeling less overwhelmed this semester than first semester freshman year.
Oh my god, the difference between freshman year and sophomore year is insane. Freshman year, we were so excited to finally be college kids and leave our old lives behind us, we may not have been as studious as we should have been. By this time last year, I was crying almost daily, questioning my choice in going to school and debating if I should go back home to work as a dog walker for a living (still not a bad idea). We may still have struggled a bit second semester freshman year, but this August, we knew what to expect and got our shit together, showing an impressive increase in GPA. The initial excitement of college life had passed and we did what we thought was impossible: calmed down and did our schoolwork.
