Five Signs You Know You're In Summer Mode

Well it's about that time of year when exams end, students graduate and the rest of the campus goes home for the summer. Unless you're on a Co-Op, Summer Abroad trip or participating in an internship, you're most likely kicking it back home with your siblings, friends, parents and pets. You may even find yourself falling back into the summer mode. You know which one I'm talking about. And, if you don't, then here are five signs you might be—but most probably are—in summer mode.

1. You've lost any and all motivation to do school work

Unless you're taking summer classes, you've most likely lost any will to do anything remotely educational. This includes everything from reviewing old concepts in preparation for next semester to answering emails from professors and classmates concerning school or club activities. This is most likely going to last until August and may even wane as you get closer to school, but don't worry. It's here to stay for the time being.

2. You haven't left your house in a few days

So since you haven't had classes, you haven't felt the need to move from your spot on the sofa. You've gotten to know the walls and inner workings of your home very well and have become accustomed to moving only a few feet each day. This shouldn't last for a while since you shouldn't do "nothing" forever. Or, you could—it's your summer.

3. You don't know today's date

Another side effect of staying home 24/7 is that you forget the date because your days blend together. To be honest, you're not sure what month it is let alone the day. All you know is that it's the summer and you don't need to go to class.

4. You've seen more shows and movies on Netflix than you have actual people

Since you got home, your life has been a constant loop of Netflix. You've watched show after show after movie after show and YES I'M STILL WATCHING. Before you've also realized that you have seen more shows and movies on Netflix than living people. It's sad to some but impressive to others.

5. You miss your friends, but not enough to want school back

You left your school and friends and you miss them! You wish you could hang out with them, but you don't wish it enough to want school back. As much as you miss them, you aren't ready to give up the freedom to watch "Gossip Girl" for six hours straight and not have any homework to procrastinate. Sorry, not sorry.

Here are the five signs proving that you are in summer mode. It'll be over before you even know it, so, for the time being, lie on a beach and forget your worries. Or, stay in front of your TV screen. I'm not judging.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
