It is that time of the year where school starts anew for all of us. While students are going back into the fires of education, a new season of television will be starting. We all have that one show that we just cannot miss during the school year as it can keep us sane (or insane, depending on your emotional investment) under all the academic pressure.
In looking at all the renewals and new premieres for this viewing season, there a number of shows that you should be watching. However, there are five in particular that you should fit in to your school schedule.
1. "Mr. Robot"
A short series (two seasons of about 12 episodes) that you could watch within the first few weeks of the first semester. This shows focuses on Eliot Anderson, an Allsafe security engineer who struggles with social anxiety disorder and clinical depression. In his free time, Eliot works as a cyber-vigilante, helping those who are victims of cyber-crimes. One day, he is recruited by a mysterious figure (Mr. Robot) to join a hacktivist group known as fsociety. The group tries to take down the company E Corp by eliminating consumer debt. Having been nominated for several Emmys and winner of the Golden Globe and Peabody Awards, this is a show to definitely watch in the fall.
2. "Designated Survivor"
An exciting new ABC thriller that every conspiracy theorist (and 24 fans) will love. Keither Sutherland (Jack Bauer of the famous 24 series) returns to television as Tom Kirkman, a member of the president’s cabinet. When Kirkman stays home one night to be with his family to watch the State of the Union, he sees a horrific explosion claim the lives of both the current President and all other members of the cabinet. Named the designated survivor, Kirkman is thrust into the role of President of the United States, unaware about what will become of his country and his family during his time as president. With Sutherland being in a show that is very 24-esque, it will make viewers clear their schedules to get caught up in the show’s conspiracy.
3. "Powerless"
A brand new comedy that will interest any fan of DC Comics. This show takes place in that universe, just not with the superheroes as the main characters. The show follows Emily Locke ("High School Musical's" Vanessa Hudgens), an insurance claims adjuster who tries to hold superheroes accountable for their actions. However, when her company gets a new boss, he attempts to have them deny the actions of heroes, thinking that people do not need them helping. This inspires Emily to rally her co-workers together, trying to be heroes without powers. With a cast of comedic actors, this show will be sure to impress.
4. "The Flash"
I have one word to describe why this season of the show will be epic: Flashpoint. At the end of the second season, Barry goes back in time to prevent the Reverse Flash from killing his mother. While he succeeds and returns to a present day in which both of his parents are alive, Barry finds Iris and Joe having no idea who he is. He also finds that Cisco and Caitlin do not know him and that Iris’ brother Wally is now Kid Flash. The Reverse Flash also warns Barry that in changing the past, it will have devastating consequences. This season will see the inclusion of Dr. Alchemy as the season’s main villain and Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy) as a new member of Central City’s CSI. It is simple math, Flashpoint plus new villain plus a "Harry Potter" character equals a must watch show for the fall.
5. "The Blacklist: Redemption"
For anyone who love "The Blacklist,"this show is an absolute must. The show will follow Elizabeth’s husband, Tom Keen and chief of Grey Matters, Susan Hargrave (Famke Janssen) trying to find out who was Elizabeth’s attacker. While little information is revealed about this show, it will be interesting seeing how Tom Keen will go to extreme lengths to get justice for his wife.
