As the summer winds down and our lazy Netflix binge watching days come to an end, here are a list of shows you should catch before the Emmys in September.
1. "Young Doctor's Notebook"
Following an investigation dealing with morphine abuse, an older doctor finds a journal from when he was starting out as a doctor. Posted in a remote village in Russia, the doctor chronicles his stories. The show serves a trip down memory lane as he reflects upon his life and advises his younger self. It is a dark and witty series. Plus, it stars Don Draper (Jon Hamm as the older doctor) and Harry Potter, enough said!
2. "Luther"
Fans of "Sherlock" will enjoy this complex and occasionally chilling series. It follows the life of Detective Inspector John Luther as he solves crimes—facing terrifying and sometimes deranged murders— and deals with the emotional burden of being a detective. It stars Idris Elba as Luther and Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan. It is a captivating drama that keeps you at the edge of your seat.
3. "Peaky Blinders"
Set in the Birmingham, England after World War I, "Peaky Blinders" is a historical fictional drama that centers around the Shelby family. The family operates an illegal racketeering and alcohol business. Combining the style and elegance of the 1920s with alternative rock soundtrack gives the series a steampunk feel.
4. "Masters of Sex"
This Emmy-nominated Showtime series combines the style of "Mad Men" with girl power. Despite the era that it is set in, the show has complex and dynamic central female characters. This smart drama, loosely based on the scientific research done by William H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson in 1957, offers insight on the relationship of Masters and Johnson, as well as power relations between men and women in the 1950s.
5. "Empire"
Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson star in this drama. Lucious Lyons (Howard) is an ex-drug dealer turned-hip-hop mogul dealing with ALS; his ex-wife (Henson) was recently released from prison. Lyons must decide to whom he will leave his fortune and therefore pits his sons against each other (a bit cruel). As the season unfolds, we gain deeper insight into the characters and what makes them tick, as well as the relationship they have with one another.
