Let's set the scene: a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden for the first time in this band's career. The crowd is roaring, the guitars are going and the thousands of voices can be heard singing the same song throughout the arena. That, my friends, is 5 Seconds of Summer's first headline performance at MSG.
You may be saying, "What's the big deal? It's just another show." In reality, yes, it is another stop on their summer Sounds Live, Feels Live tour, but it is a big milestone for the band. Thousands of artists pray to have a headlining show at the world's most famous arena in New York City. Finally, 5 Seconds of Summer had their "Oh crap, we made it" moment when they hit the stage.
Before the concert I had the opportunity to attend the band's soundcheck. At the soundcheck, the four Australian lads (Ashton Irwin, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Michael Clifford) explained how they went from playing at local bars and in garages to now playing a sold-out show at a well-known arena.
The humble members of 5 Seconds of Summer thanked the crowd and were filled with gratitude because they were presented with such an incredible honor. Their show exhibited how anyone can pursue his or her own dreams.
The performance was beyond entertaining and I was surrounded by the loudest audience I have ever encountered. The energy in the room was overwhelming and the concert itself was a lifetime experience. As the night progressed, each song got better and better. The instrumentally and vocally talented band definitely deserved the opportunity that they earned.
The edgy, rock and roll feel performance ended with a bang. The band performed their new "Ghostbusters" track, "Girls Talk Boys," for the first time after releasing it the morning of the show. 5 Seconds of Summer continues to amaze their fans all over the world. They completely owned their performance at Madison Square Garden and will hopefully have many more performances at the venue in the future.
As the band would want to hear, it sounded live and felt live.
