5 Seconds Of Summer Is Back And They're Worth A Second Chance

It's been 3 years, and new music is finally here.

If you remember 5 Seconds of Summer, you're probably thinking about the band that opened up for One Direction in 2014. Or you're thinking of the song about underwear (still pretty catchy, if you ask me.)

And you're right to think of both. If that tour didn't do it,"She Looks So Perfect" surely skyrocketed the Australian pop-rock band into world stardom. But the world may have wrongly underestimated these four guys.

While touring with teen heartthrobs certainly earned them more fans than their YouTube covers ever had the chance to, they got pigeonholed into the "boyband" stereotype, which made it difficult for them to be taken seriously. Pop punk, the genre they strived to be a part of, did not normally accompany hordes of screaming tween One Direction fans (no shade to 1D, I still love them.) Nevertheless, they produced and played great music, and saw enormous success.

Three years later, 5SOS is back. And if you were skeptical of them before, you might want to give them a second chance.

With the release of "Want You Back," the lead single from the upcoming album Youngblood set for release in June, a new era is upon us. It's becoming clear that they're finally finding their sound after years of trying to emulate others'.

They're currently on a short tour of intimate underplays in Europe and North America, during which they're testing out some new music with select fans. They could easily sell out amphitheaters if they wished, but this gives them the opportunity to dabble in something a little different before the new album is released and they embark on their promotion tour at the end of the summer.

Thursday, April 12 saw the release of the titular track "Youngblood" which truly establishes the more mature tone of the album. Gone are the days of a bubblegum pop hook and chorus, and lead singer Luke Hemmings proves himself to be a more powerful vocalist than we've heard from him in previous years.

If you're a die-hard 5SOS fan, I can't promise it's the same sound from the hemmo1996 YouTube videos. But I can promise it will definitely still be stuck in your head.

You can pre-order "Youngblood" now, and the album will be released everywhere June 22, 2018.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
