5 Reasons You Need To Go See Moana

It's not your typical "Disney Princess" movie.

A couple weekends ago, I took my littlest brother to see Disney's newest princess movie, Moana. He was pumped, but I think I was secretly more excited to see it than he was. I had been listening to the soundtrack here and there, and I thought the songs were pretty fab. It definitely wasn't a chore to take him.

Our obligatory "movie date" photo

This movie did not disappoint-- in fact, I'm a little bit obsessed with it now. It was so cute, and the music is my favorite from any Disney movie I've seen. The absolute opposite of a "knock-off Lilo and Stitch," as my step-brother calls it.

I'm not a hardcore Disney person, but this movie is definitely worth the watch. Here are a few reasons why:

The music

How many times can I mention the music in the first 200 words of this article? The answer is: not nearly enough times. It's so good! I've had the songs stuck in my head for weeks now, and I'm still not tired of them. I haven't sung in the shower in years (it's hard to do in college dorms without being persecuted), but I actually sing these songs in the shower.

I'm a child.

The scenery

SO PRETTY. Seriously, look at that! The entire movie is like this. It stays visually interesting for the entire hour and 53 minutes. Nice job, Disney.

The culture

Moana is part of some sort of Polynesian culture (the internet isn't sure which, but it's probably a mix of quite a few different cultures) and the movie focuses heavily on her island, family and customs. It is neat to see this culture- one that isn't often taught about in other places- in a new light.

The plot

Though the movie was a little hard to understand for my baby brother, I thought it was super interesting and very clearly aimed at the "older" Disney kids, like myself. I'm not going to give too much away, but I was on my seat for the entire movie...

... if I wasn't hiding at the back of my seat, wiping away tears.

The characters

I cannot talk enough how much I love these characters. There is not a single character in this movie that didn't speak to me on a personal level-- even the dumb little chicken, Hai Hai.

Moana herself is strong and independent-- not unlike other Disney princesses, but still my favorite. She brings a new kind of vibe to the Disney franchise that hasn't been seen in a long time, if ever... not even with Frozen.

Like I said before, this movie did not disappoint in a single way. In fact, I think it was one of my favorites I've seen all year. Sure, I'm a sucker for a good musical, but this movie is so much fun and so interesting in ways other than just music, too.

That being said-- go out and see this movie! Take your kids, your neighbors' kids, your cousins or just go by yourself. It's so worth it.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
